Cosmetic damage exclusions and what they actually mean
A growing number of Texas policies carry a cosmetic damage endorsement, which excludes hail damage that affects appearance but not function. Insurers apply it broadly. It is worth reading closely, because the exclusion is generally written for metal roofing and siding where a dent does not shorten service life — not for asphalt shingles where an impact has fractured the mat and broken the water seal.
The distinction is provable. A bruise that gives under thumb pressure and shows a fractured mat is functional damage, and it accelerates granule loss and leak risk. Getting that on record early is what stops a functional loss being settled as a cosmetic one.
