Seismic damage or Texas clay? The distinction the claim turns on
Gulf Coast soils shrink and swell with moisture, and foundation movement is so routine here that carriers reach for it first. Earth movement and settlement are standard exclusions, so if your damage can be attributed to soil behaviour, the claim ends.
Seismic damage has different signatures. It appears suddenly rather than progressively, correlates in time with a recorded event, and produces shear and stair-step patterns with a directional consistency across the structure that gradual settlement does not. Establishing that requires a documented event record, an elevation survey and, on larger losses, a structural engineer's opinion — assembled together rather than piecemeal.
